Many people prefer a skin weft weave over other types of weaves because of their beauty and the time taken to complete. One of the newer types of weaves, a skin weft weave is luxurious and undetectable when completed properly. A skin weft weave is similar to other bonded weaves. The only difference is that in a regular bonded weave, the track is applied directly to the scalp. In a skin weft weave, the track is actually applied to the natural hair. It's very important to remember that just like other bonded weaves, extra care must be taken around heated styling tools. Hot devices such as ceramic irons, crimpers, and curling irons can melt the glue that holds the hair in place. Skin weft weaves work best with human hair, but synthetic hair can also be used. Human hair is preferred because it's stronger and it can be colored, heat-styled, and wet-set. Some synthetic hair can be wet-set, but if you plan on styling it any other way, you should use human hair. Always make sure to match your natural hair with the color and texture of the extension hair you choose. Here's what it takes to complete a skin weft weave: 1. If you can, start by straightening the hair beforehand. This is so that you won't have to straighten over the bond. Always start with clean hair. Hair that has oil, products, or gels in it can cause the bond not to adhere properly. 2. Start off by making your first part in a horizontal direction at the base of the head. Measure the track like you normally would, then place the bond on the weft. 3. Place your weft as close to the scalp as possible. Remember, don't lay the weft on the scalp- put it on the hair. Press down firmly for a few seconds to ensure that the bond adheres securely. 4. Your next part should be roughly 1/2'' thick. Follow the same directions to place the track on the hair, brushing the hair between the application of wefts to stop the hair from getting tangled. All your parts for the remainder of the weft application should be 1/2'' thick. 5. Continue placing the weft on the hair until you have a piece on top that you can't apply tracks to in a horizontal fashion. Create a part about 1-2 inches from the top of the forehead. With this piece and the remaining amount of hair, part the hair how you or your client would like it parted. Use the rest of the hair to blend and cover the tracks. As always, be extra careful not to touch your ceramic or curling iron to the bonded part of the weft. The glue used can melt when exposed to heat, and too much heat can cause the wefts to lose their bond and slip. A skin weft weave will last anywhere from 2-4 weeks when maintained and cared for properly.
